Weavers of Aycliffe

©Vivien Ellis December 22, 2008

In the Parson and White Directory of 1828 it says of Aycliffe that about 100 linen weavers were employed in linen weaving for Darlington.  Linen weaving was generally said to have stopped about 1837, according to Whellans Directory of 1856. There were still several weavers in the 1841 census.  For a more detailed study of weaving in the Darlington and Aycliffe area, see Gillian Cookson's article on The Textile Industry.

The information here has been gathered as I have been transcribing the baptism, marriage and burial registers of St. Andrew’s Church, Aycliffe, and the census for the Great Aycliffe area, and an indenture dating from 1763.  So far I have identified at least 60 weavers and their families.  Hopefully more information will be gathered the further back I go in time in the registers.  So far the information extends from the 1760s to 1861. Click here for an alphabetical list of the weavers.

Many weavers were from the parish, but several came from elsewhere.  It is hoped to produce a map to show the incomers’ origins.

The weaver named in the indenture of July 11, 1763 is Ralph Graham, who took a poor child, William Walker, son of Thomas Walker of Darlington, as an apprentice weaver for 10 years. There is a Ralph Graham in the Marriage Register who married Alice Hutchinson, 1762. Is this the same man?

Ralph  Graham Aycliffe Banns May 9, 16, 23 Alice  Hutchinson Aycliffe her mark 24-May 1762 Ben Barwise, Curate

For a transcription of the indenture, click here.

The next of the weavers is George Pearson (Perceson), and his wife, Mary Pallister, both from the parish, living in Aycliffe.  They married June 3, 1792, and had at least 5 children:

Joseph and Agnes do not appear in the 1841 census. Their daughter, Rosamond, however, married William Wilkinson, butcher, of Aycliffe, son of John Wilkinson, labourer, February 20, 1841. John Proud and Margaret Wood were their witnesses.

Margaret Wood, of Aycliffe, daughter of Joseph Wood, weaver, married John Rowntree, miller, of Heighington, son of Thomas Rowntree, miller, October 14, 1847.

Benjamin Wood, farmer, of Aycliffe, son of Joseph Wood, weaver, married Hannah Peacock, of Aycliffe, daughter of William Peacock, farmer, December 2, 1851. Witnesses George Robinson and Thomas Davidson.

Thomas Bentley of Darlington married Anne Wood of St. Andrew, Auckland, but by 1802 had their children baptised at Aycliffe:

Native to the parish were John Brown(e) and Margaret Snaith, married May 8, 1802.  Sadly they lost their first daughter and son, aged 7 weeks and 8 months respectively.  In 1809 they were living in Heighington Street when their 3rd daughter, Mary, was born March 11.

Next are Richard Garry, of Aycliffe, and his wife Deborah Wood, of Newby Wiske, daughter of Thomas Wood, weaver.  They married at St. Andrew’s Church May 30, 1803.  He was about 22 and Deborah about 17.  Their first daughter, Rosamond, died September 30, 1805, age 18 months.   They named their second daughter, born 2 months later, Rosamond.  5 children have been found so far:

Richard Garry was also in the Durham Local Militia in 1816. Click here to view the list from the Durham Chronicle.

James Thomson Henderson, of Bishop Middleham, is interesting. He was born about 1781.  He married Mary Lee of Stockton April 27, 1807.  She had been in the parish since 1802, when her illegitimate son, John Lee, born August 27, was baptized September 12.  James and Mary had at least 4 children, the last being James Thompson Henderson, who was born posthumously on December 16, 1809.  His father had died 3 months earlier on September 13, 1809, and was buried September 15, age 28.  In the Burial Register the entry says that he was the son of the Rev. Matthew Henderson.  According to Valerie Brown’s SALTIRE, p.26, Matthew Henderson first signed the Parish Register April 28, 1793.  He was the Minister or Curate of Sadberge, 1800-1813, but took duty at Aycliffe between 1806 and 1812.  He resigned from Sadberge in 1813 and was buried at Aycliffe August 6, 1816, age 66.
