William Hakin was born 1918 in Darlington, Co. Durham. Parents: James John Hakin, born 1862 in Melsonby, Yorkshire, and Dorothy Tait, born 1866 in Bothal, Northumberland. They had married in 1903 in Richmond, Yorkshire. In the 1911 census they had 4 children. Another child, Jane E Hakin was born 1915, 3 years before William. William married Nancy Robinson of Aycliffe in 1939. Army number: 439164. Rank: Private. Unit: Green Howards (Yorkshire Regiment), 4th Battalion. William died May 30, 1940, age 21.
