Harry Newton Futter was born September 22, 1899 at Blackhill, Co. Durham. Harry was the son of Alfred Futter, born in Norfolk, and Mary Ann Gray of Holmside, Durham. They had married in the Stockton area in 1880. In the 1891 census the family were living at Ferryhill and in the 1901 and 1911 census were at 11, Dixon Street, Blackhill. Harry was still living with his parents and was still at school.

Harry served in the Royal Flying Corps as a pilot. He was granted an Honorary Commission as 2nd Lieutenant. This appeared in The London Gazette, April 27, 1920.

Harry married Ellen Taylor Moss in 1922.
